Executive Summary

Pipe bursting is the newest innovation in the Directional Boring and Trenchless Technology industry.

Advanced Pipe Bursting Systems NZ Ltd., is the new sister company to Directional Boring NZ Ltd., both owned by Fraser Enterprises. During 1994 the MD of Fraser Enterprises, Peter Fraser, with his son, Paul, and over 35 years experience in the Civil field, decided to focus on directional boring. Boring was, and still is, at the heart of many Civil Contracting projects and until recently, often resulted in increased boring, environmental damage and higher costs. Peter believed that these costs using traditional techniques were unnecessary.

Directional Boring NZ Ltd. developed because of technological improvements and the demand for better results, and went about importing the latest technological advances in Boring Techniques from the USA. Whilst there, they aquainted them selves with the Vermeer Guided Boring System, which was so impressive that Directional Boring NZ Ltd. invested over half a million dollars in training and state-of-the-art machinery. The investment in the Multi-Directional, non terrain disruption system allowed Directional Boring NZ Ltd. to offer its clients a whole new class of Guided Boring, and they soon became respected leaders in the Trenchless Technology industry in New Zealand. They were part of the initiative that established the New Zealand arm of the Australian Society for Trenchless Technology.

That was 6 years ago! Today, Directional Boring NZ Ltd. is a professional organisation comprising a team of high quality industry-trained personnel using the latest methods and technologies to consistently achieve, results on time and within budget, 'boring excellence' !

Pipe bursting became the evolutionary next step, and typically involves pulling in new polyethylene pipe through an existing pipeline. The pneumatic impact tool bursts existing pipe and pushes the broken pieces into the surrounding soil. The advantages are that the Pipe bursting process follows the existing pipe path, and can be used to increase capacity by increasing the service line up to 2 sizes larger than the pipe being replaced. The new pipe is connected to a special steel bursting head that covers the new pipe and acts as a casing to carry the new pipe, or could be the service pipe itself.
The pneumatic impact tool rams through the existing line while being winched to the end point, which would typically be an exit pit or manhole.

Pipe bursting allows the replacement of a collapsed stormwater pipe, old sewer or watermain, without major excavations, saving money and causing virtually no traffic disruption. The potential to reduce roadway deterioration caused by potholes is also a distinct advantage. Advanced Pipe Bursting Systems NZ Ltd. with its pipe bursting technology is brought to you by the same team at Directional Boring NZ Ltd., with the same professionalism and passion for 'bursting excellence'.
